Production volume and scale
Vortakt’s capacity is impossible to ignore. Last year we produced 162,357 barrels, which required just under 750,000 pounds of steel. Running three shifts daily and leveraging advanced manufacturing technology and automation, we delivered enough pistol and rifle barrels in 12 months to equip the entire active-duty military of any one of 161 countries. For comparison, the United Kingdom fields about 144,400 active-duty personnel, Spain 120,350, and Poland 114,050.Â
It’s tough to wrap your head around numbers like these. Line up every barrel we produced last year and you’d have a continuous stretch of steel running 46.5 miles, or 2,946,413.90 inches of machined precision. The raw material tally is equally impressive. 742,684 pounds of barrel steel were machined over the year, about the weight of a Boeing 747.
material usage
Our material usage skews heavily toward conventional gun-barrel steels. Production data shows:
- 70.1% of customer barrels made from 4140/4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium (CrMoV)
- 22.9% from 410/416R stainless
- 6.9%Â from custom or special materials
SPECIFICATIONS AND CONFIGURATION
With our material choices carefully selected for durability and precision, we are able to support some of the most demanding performance specifications. Our production is dominated by one performance series. 112,904 barrels were produced from our 200 Series, representing 69% of total output and making it our most popular performance series offering. Over 5,000 barrels with a 1:3 twist in .338 caliber were shipped last year, demonstrating our ability to produce at extreme specifications with consistency and scale. Regarding rifling, 5R rifling is the most common pattern, making up 41.2% of orders, while traditional 4 groove rifling remains rare, accounting for only 2.6% of orders.
